"Nic!" Emily calls out behind me, but her voice is fading fast. I'm on the move; I'm following the man I've spent the past four years with as he waltzes down the street. From the back he doesn't look like he has a care in the world. He's wearing a long wool suit coat.

Where's he going that requires such smart dress?

I recognise the woman he's with. She's a work colleague. Her hair is in an up do and she's dressed nicely as well. When they both turn the corner at Copenhagen Street, a sense of relief overwhelms me.

I know what's going on here. They're off to an important business party with clients at his office, just down this road. It's at the complete opposite end of the High Street to my photography studio. Or should I say 'our' studio? We do both live in the flat above. After all, Dalton didn't leave his set of keys when he left today, so I'm confident he hasn't gone for good.

He hasn't answered my calls, hasn't spoken to me. I'm confident within myself that if I could just speak with him, he'll see the error of his decision.

Smoothing down my hair, I chew the final bit of mintyness out of the disposable toothbrush in my mouth, before spitting it into the nearest bin. Luckily, I didn't get a speck of sick on myself during my revolting spew-fest at the bar.

My footsteps are only slightly wobbly from too many alcoholic drinks. Besides, there's nothing that will keep me from seeing Dalton this instant.

I'm a woman on a mission now. A mission to pound some sense into her true love. Because that's what Dalton is. He's my soul mate and I'm his. I just need to explain this to him and he'll see sense.

I turn the corner at Copenhagen Street. The heel of my shoe catches in the cobblestones. I teeter and tiptoe my way towards the front door of Dalton's office building.

The more I think about it, the sillier this whole situation seems. I'm even inclined to believe Dalton has played an elaborate joke on me.

"I know what this is!" I shout out to no one. A few passers-by give me a wide berth, for some unknown reason. I do know what this is though.

Dalton is pretending to have left me. He's faking this because he's going to propose marriage to me! I just know it!

It makes sense. We've been together for over four years and he's finally found the perfect way to surprise me.

Yes.

I know this is his plan.

"Oh, Dalt." A little smile plays on my lips. "You are a tricky boy." I'm mumbling to myself and I don't care what anyone thinks. The alcoholic buzz in my brain renews my confidence.

I push through the double glass doors of Dalton's office building. I can hear music coming from the conference room at the end of the corridor. Wandering down the hall I tuck my clutch under my armpit and open the door to the conference room and peek inside.
